THE PURPOSE OF Life
I have been reading Epicurus and the Epicureans lately and have considered whether there is certainly any such thing as Epicurean aesthetics, and what such an aesthetics could donate to everyday routine. This seems a strange question at first since “Epicurean” is virtually synonymous in our culture with a love of the nice things in life, i.e. epicureans in food.
However Epicurus himself was critical of the extremely things the modern epicureans appear to love. The goal of a good Epicurean is to achieve a complete life free of pain and be concerned. The main pleasures you need to pursue are ones that are both necessary and natural. One should avoid the ones that are natural however, not necessary, especially if pursuing them will cause pain or worry. And shun the ones that are neither necessary nor natural, because they are most likely to bring trouble.
So the pleasures of eating and drinking are important, sexual pleasures less so relatively, and the pleasures of fame, fortune, and gourmet food not worth the difficulty usually. In short, you need to avoid luxuries if what must be done to cover them causes some pain. Epicurus suggests a simple pleasure and life of simple pleasures, although if luxurious pleasures come along without trouble they could be appreciated without guilt. It seems strange to state that the goal of life is lack of pain and get worried. I think that it was a blunder of Epicurus to place the idea so negatively.
The goal of life, as he says elsewhere, is pleasure, and the most enjoyable life is one which is without worry and pain. I suspect that the Epicurean ideal of absence of pain is really one of a type or kind of pervasive comfort, both physical and mental. So in general you can say that Epicurus is a hero of everyday aesthetics insofar as it promotes a certain aesthetic quality in life.
He is obviously not a hero of the looks of art. He does not appear to think much of the arts, stimulating a learning student in a single notice never to study culture. He was even said to have described poetry and music as “noise” and also to have joined Plato in rejecting them from the ideal society. I suppose he saw the arts as more luxuries just. But I don’t believe this attack on the arts is essential or even useful for everyday aesthetics.
Also, followers later, like Walter Pater and Oscar Wilde, agreed with him with this point hardly. So an Epicurean, in the original sense of the word is somebody who seeks a pervasive experience of comfort and safety linked with the basic pleasure of life and richly textured by memory and anticipation (this is much like Dewey).

Another facet of the pleasures of the Epicurean life is the importance of friendship. There is much discussion in the scholarly books over whether Epicurus noticed friends as simply useful for gaining pleasure and security or whether he appreciated friends in themselves. Whereas Aristotle saw man as a politics animal Epicurus sees him as an animal for whom the correct richness of experience is impossible without a friendly relationship. The pleasures of a friendly relationship, of shared pleasure basically, add another aspect to the complexity of pleasure. Just what exactly I am saying is an appearance of everyday life should probably follow Epicurus in emphasizing the wealthy complexity of aesthetic experience in the ways just discussed.
